Your Comic Book Dream: How to Get Published!

Do you love drawing cool characters and telling exciting stories? Maybe you have a fantastic idea for a comic book, a whole world inside your head just waiting for others to discover. If you dream of seeing your comic on shelves, you’re in luck! Many companies help independent creators, like you, publish their amazing work.

You might know about huge comic companies like Marvel and DC. They publish popular superheroes, but they usually hire writers and artists for their existing characters. However, a different kind of publisher exists, and they want youroriginal ideas! These are “independent” publishers. They often focus on “creator-owned” comics. That means you, the person who made the comic, keep all the rights to your characters and stories. This is super important because it means you control your creations!

Image Comics and Friends: Your Publishing Partners

Image Comics is a well-known independent publisher. They made a name for themselves by only publishing creator-owned books. This allows artists and writers to truly own their creations. Image takes a small fee from the sales, and the creators decide how to share the rest of the money.

But Image isn’t the only game in town! Many other fantastic independent publishers want to see your work. Here are a few examples:

  • Dark Horse Comics: They publish a wide range of comics, including popular titles like “Hellboy.” They also welcome creator-owned projects.
  • Oni Press: This publisher is famous for the “Scott Pilgrim” series and publishes all sorts of comics, from horror to fantasy.
  • Fantagraphics: If you like more artistic or “alternative” comics, Fantagraphics might be a good fit. They have published interesting and unique stories for many years.
  • Vault Comics: This newer publisher focuses on exciting horror, sci-fi, and fantasy stories. They love new and diverse voices.
  • Antarctic Press: This publisher has a long history and is known for comics with a manga or anime style.
  • BOOM! Studios: They publish a mix of original stories and comics based on existing characters.
  • Mad Cave Studios: This indie publisher even runs an annual contest to help new comic writers and artists get their projects published!

Ready to Submit Your Comic?

Before you send your comic to a publisher, you need to prepare it carefully. Most publishers do not want just a story idea. They want to see finished pages!

Here’s what you usually need:

  1. A complete proposal: This means you have finished penciled, inked, and lettered pages of your comic. If your comic will be in color, you might include colored pages too. Publishers want to see how you tell a story with pictures and words, not just hear your ideas.
  2. A short cover letter: Write a letter that tells the publisher about your project and any past work you have done. Include your contact information.
  3. A one-page summary: Tell the whole story in one page, including the ending! Explain what makes your comic special and who will enjoy reading it.
  4. Sequential art pages: Most publishers ask for at least five finished pages. These pages show how your story flows from panel to panel. Do not send original art; send copies!
  5. A cover design: Create a mock-up of what your comic’s cover will look like. This shows your design skills and helps the publisher see your vision.

Remember, publishers like Image want you to come with your creative team already in place. This means you need to find an artist if you are a writer, or a writer if you are an artist. You also need to figure out how you will split any money you earn if your comic gets published.

Always check a publisher’s specific submission guidelines on their website. They often change what they accept and how they want you to submit your work. Some publishers might only accept submissions during certain times of the year.

If a publisher is not currently accepting “unsolicited submissions” (meaning they did not ask you for your project), do not send it. They will likely not look at it.

Other Paths to Publishing

Even if a big indie publisher does not pick up your comic, you still have options!

  • Self-publishing: You can print your own comic books. Websites and companies specialize in printing for independent creators. You can also sell your comic online through platforms like ComiXology or Webtoon.
  • Crowdfunding: Websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo let you raise money from fans to print your comic. This can be a great way to get your first comic made and build a fan base.

Making a comic book and getting it published takes hard work and dedication. But if you have a great story to tell and put in the effort, you can make your comic book dream a reality!
